Non-traditional remedies out there for baby reflux and colic

You've tried it all and nothing's changed.

Short of conjuring some ancient spit up spirit to cast a spell on your household, you may have grown more open-minded in finding solutions.

Here's a collection of more unconventional ideas that I've found online and heard from talking with parents going through this with their wee one.

I'm a worry wart so I didn't try any of these, so I can't attest to their safety or effectiveness. But I do know how it feels to be at the end of your rope.

  • Chiropractor: From a tip shared on our Down With Spit Up Facebook page, I got keyed into something I hadn't heard before about parent's taking their babies to chiropractors to get adjusted from their cramped up time in the womb. MamaNatural.com features this as their top tip when the medical approach failed. Per the article "However, a little word of caution. If you choose to take your baby to a chiropractor, make sure they are very experienced with babies and also that they do very light adjustments. When adjusting your baby, it should look like a light massage, nothing like what you see in the movies or what is done on an adult."

  • Essential Oils: Also in that article, and in comments around the web, including this article from The Holistic Mama, there's a product called DigestZen from doTERRA Essential Oils that you rub on your baby's tummy.

  • Hazelwood Necklaces: There's lot of talk online and in forums about the benefits of hazelwood and just as much for its application for babies with reflux. I found a few success stories including this one on the BabyCenter.com "Surviving Reflux" forums, and another from So Mommy, called Can a necklace really help reflux? (also sharing for the cute photo).

  • Adult Remedies? I learned about a few things that adults turn to for reflux, but very skeptical if they are appropriate for babies. One of my contacts actually contacted their Apple Cider Vinegar manufacturer to see if it was ok for babies, but did not receive a response (guessing a big NO there). Things like probiotics, a supplement called slippery elm, and more, are out there, with research on the rise.

For more advice, I'd recommend joining and posting on a highly active group on BabyCenter called Surviving Reflux: Dealing with Colic, Reflux, & MSPI. The frequency and severity of these posts reminds me why I'm doing what I'm doing here, and shows me that I still have so much to learn.

As long as you're doing your homework and putting safety first, sometimes you need to think outside of the bib to find what's right for your youngin. What

Yea, I went there. Nearly half of all babies spit up, regularly. Some more, some less, and for many it's just plain scary.

I'm an overly concerned mom with an overworked washing machine. Learn more about me.
